Understanding Earth systems

I work at the intersection of Earth system science, hydrology, and artificial intelligence.

My research spans river water quality, precipitation nowcasting, runoff change, and seasonal sea surface temperature forecasting.

Across these topics, I am interested in how models can produce useful forecasts while helping us understand the processes behind them.

Precipitation nowcasting

How can different forecasting approaches work together?

I investigated strategies for coupling deep learning and optical flow in satellite-based precipitation nowcasting over China.

The study compares the performance of different coupling strategies across regions and forecast lead times.

This work was published in Hydrological Sciences Journal in 2026, following online publication in 2025. Read the paper · Explore the code.

Learning across a river network

Can information from one part of a river help predict another?

I studied water quality prediction in Beijing’s sub-center using LSTM and back-propagation neural networks.

The transfer-learning approach uses the upstream–downstream relationships between river gauges.

The work was published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research in 2023. Read the paper.

From hydrology to ocean forecasting

My research in 2024–2025 explored the effects of human activities and climate change on runoff.

At the Southern University of Science and Technology, I have worked on deep learning for seasonal sea surface temperature forecasting, with related interests in algal bloom drivers and prediction.

These directions connect to my broader interest in physically interpretable AI for Earth system processes.
